Chapter 14

They arrived together at Fiona and Gabe’s house the night of October 31. Waverly waited as Lark looked at the front of the house. Even in the dark, the beautiful white single-family home stood out on the quiet street. Gabe and Fiona weren’t much for gardening or decorating, but they had lined the path leading up to the house with pretty garden lights.

“Very nice,” Lark said. “So they live here together?”

“Yup, and Crystal and Emma live that way.” Waverly pointed down the street, toward town. Ashland was a small town with a population of only 2500 people, give or take. It was a cozy place, part bedroom community, part rural industry. Waverly liked commuting to the dance studio throughout the week, but she loved coming home to this quiet little town only forty minutes from both Omaha and Lincoln.

“I still haven’t seen your place,” Lark pointed out.

“Well, I share it with my sister, so that’s why. Unless you want to have to muffle your cute little moans of pleasure, we’re going to stay away from my apartment.”

Lark’s blush was visible, even in the limited light, and she nodded knowingly. “Hence, we’re staying at my place tonight, because I love hearing you absolutely lose your mind.” She turned Waverly to face her, their lips just barely touching.

“Mm, yes, and I love the idea.” Waverly edged closer to Lark to claim a kiss and smiled when the violinist put her arms around her shoulders. It felt good to finally bring a plus one to one of the coven’s gatherings. As much as she wanted to stay in Lark’s embrace, their breasts brushing over one another’s while she nibbled at the violinist’s lips, she knew everyone else was expecting them.

Letting out a little sigh, Waverly stepped back and urged Lark the rest of the way up the walkway. They finally reached the door and knocked, even though they hadn’t put any more distance between the two of them.

The door opened, revealing a petite, curvy redhead. Fiona looked at them with a grin and stepped aside. “Come on in,” she said. “The gang’s all here.”

Waverly felt protected, not just by Lark’s natural earth energy, but the arm slung over her shoulders. It was a statement of togetherness, of belonging, and Waverly just wanted to snuggle even closer to the woman at her side. She didn’t know if it was the holiday, the energy of the gathering, or just being with Lark, but Waverly suddenly realized she was looking forward to spending the night at Lark’s more than the ritual itself. That was saying something, considering everyone in their coven couldn’t wait for the Tabula Rasa each year.

“Welcome,” Emma said as they entered the kitchen, where everyone else was shuffling dishes around the table. “You have excellent timing. Did you bring the wine?”

“Of course.” Waverly set the bottle in the middle of the table and Lark added bread. Each participant brought a dish to share for rituals. It seemed there was more and more food as time went on, as they added girlfriends to the group.
